2 squared is 2^2
2 cubed is 2^3
If they are fractions or decimals use parentheses.
2^(3/4)
2^(2.5)
Also if the base is involved use parentheses.
(2x+5)^2
Any time there is a chance of confusing anything put it in parentheses.
