what is (-5) to the zero power?
---
(-5)/(-5) = 1 because any number (except zero) divided by itself is one.
--------------
(-5)^1/(-5)^1 = (-5)^(1-1) = (-5)^0
--------------------
Since the quotient = 1 and the quotient = (-5)^0
(-5)^0 must be one
=======================
In general (a)^0 = 1 for all values of "a" except a = 0.
