The second given equation is already solved for , so we can plug this equation into the first to obtain:
. The second equation is simply put in the place of the in the first equation.
To solve this, combine the terms on the left hand side of the equation:
.
Then, subtract the 3 from both sides:
.
To obtain what equals, divide both sides by 4:
.
This result can then be plugged back into the second equation to determine that is equal to.
So:

Which yields: .
Our answer is then , .

3x+y=-5
y=x+3 or -x+y=3

Solve by substitution.

Solved by pluggable solver: SOLVE linear system by SUBSTITUTION
Solve:
We'll use substitution. After moving 1*y to the right, we get:
, or . Substitute that
into another equation:
and simplify: So, we know that y=1. Since , x=-2.

Answer: .

ANSWER: The solution is (-2,1) or x=-2 and y=1.

3x+y=-5
y=x+3
solve by substitution.
------------------
Substitute for "y" and solve for "x":
3x + x+3 = -5
4x = -8
x = -2
-------
Substitute into y = x+3 to solve for "y":
y = -2+3 = 1
