Sandy has $3.25 in change.
She has five more dimes than quarters but twice as many nickels as dimes.
Express the given information as an algebraic equation and simplify.
:
Let n = no. of nickels
Let d = no. of dimes
Let q = no. of quarters
;
Write an equation for each statement;
:
"Sandy has $3.25 in change."
.05n + .10d + .25q = 3.25
:
" She has five more dimes than quarters"
d = q + 5
or
q = d - 5
:
" but twice as many nickels as dimes."
n = 2d
:
Express the given information as an algebraic equation and simplify.
:
Using the 1st equation (total$) substitute:
(d-5) for q
2d for n:
and you have:
.05(2d) + .10d + .25(d-5) = 3.25
:
.10d + .10d + .25d - 1.25 = 3.25
:
.45d = 3.25 + 1.25
:
.45d = 4.50
d =
d = 10 dimes
:
You can find the nickels and quarters easily from the equations

Answer by scott8148(6628)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
"Sandy has $3.25 in change" ___ 25Q + 10D + 5N = 325

"She has five more dimes than quarters" ___ Q = D - 5

"twice as many nickels as dimes" ___ N = 2 * D

substituting ___ 25(D - 5) + 10D + 5(2 * D) = 350

solve for D, then substitute to find Q and N
