Question 16666: Hi, could you please tell me if I got this answer right? Thanks, here's the equation: (x^2 + 4x +5)(x^2 + x - 2), x=-3.
I didn't know how to do exponets on the computer so the ^ sign is for the exponets.
This is what I got and need to know if its right: 224
Thank you sOOo much!!!

Answer by Earlsdon(6294)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
First, you did correctly indicate exponents by using the caret (^), but what you have here is an expression, not an equation.
Second, it would appear, although you don't say so, that you have to evaluate this expression for x = -3.
If this is correct, we'll proceed.
Evaluate the expression:
for x = -3 Substitute -3 for every x in the expresion and perform the indicated operations.

= = 8
With your answer of 224, I just can't imagine what you must have done!

Answer by elima(1433)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(x^2 + 4x +5)(x^2 + x - 2), x=-3
((-3)^2+4(-3)+5)((-3)^2+(-3)-2)
Multiply (-3)(-3)=9; two negatives multiplied together = positive;
4(-3)=-12; a negative multiplied by a positve = negative;
(9-12+5)(9-3-2)
(-3+5)(6-2)
(2)(4)=8
You need to be careful of your negatives
Hope you see what you did wrong, when you multiplied (-3)(-3)=-9
Otherwise you did good!
=)
