Add the numbers 3.6 x 10^5 and 6.7 x 10^4 without WRITING the number in standard form.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do them either all as 10^5 or as 10^4.
36 x 10^4 + 6.7 x 10^4
42.7 x 10^4
4.27 x 10^5
If keeping only two significant figures, then 4.3 x 10^5.

3.6 * 10^5 + 6.7 * 10^4
10^4(3.6 * 10^1 + 6.7) ------- Factoring out GCF, 10^4
10^4(36 + 6.7)
10^4(42.7) =======> 42.7 * 10^4
4.27 * 10^1 * 10^4
4.27 * 10^5 <======= your answer
