Question 98553: I am having trouble with a question on rules of exponants. I have 6 questions to do but don't know how to reduce or move exponents (positive and negative) from one side of the equation to the other. My first question in my home work is:
open bracket n to the 5th closed bracket to the negative 6 equals 1
(n5)-6 = 1 I guess I should write it like (n^5)^-6 = 1
When I move an exponent across the equals sign does it become a root and does a negative become a positive. So that the -6 exponent would become a positive root 6??
This is on a hand out there is no text book (ISBN)

Answer by stanbon(75887)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Exponents change sign when you move them up and down not right and left
------------
1/x^2 = x^-2/1
-----------
x^3 = 1/x^-3
---------------
(n^5)^-6 = 1
n^-30 = 1
1/[n^30] = 1
Cross-multiply to get:
n^30 =x
n = 1 or n = -1
