Question 774393: I know you are working with students who are currently doing algebra equations and mine is somewhat of an algebra equation.
$200.00 - (-$29.30) is it not $229.30 ?
I am currently taking a medical bookkeeping class and the problem is this. The patient has a previous balance (D) of $200.00. There are no charges (A). Payments (B1) are zero but the adjustments (B2) are 29.00. The current charge (C) therefore is $229.00.
Formula: C = (D + A) - (B1 + B2)
(200.00 + 0) - (0 + [-29.30])
Based on what I read in this website you said a (+) number minus any (-) number equals a (+) number.
I hope you can help me with this trivial dilemma. If you cannot do you know of one who is taking a bookkeeping class that can help me?
Thank you, Santlui519@gmail.com

Answer by DrBeeee(684)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You are correct, $229.30.
When you subtract a negative NUMBER, it is the same as ADDing the NUMBER. In the example;
(1) S = 200 - (-29.30) or
(2) S = 200 + 29.30 or
(3) S = 229.30
