remember that the square root of something is just a way of asking you "what times itself will equal ?
So if you factor everything under the radical (the square root sign) you can pull things out by groups of two... everything that doesn't have two in it's group remains under the radical:
Pull out the group of 3s, two groups of x's and one group of y's:
we multiply them together to get 3*x*x*y = This will go to the left of the radical sign. Everything that didn't get pulled out remains inside:
