with a horizontal line sandwiched by two algebraic expressions?
You could have written it as (6^2 - (1/2)^3)/(7/8 + 5/12) and the meaning would have been very clear.
That horizontal line is the greatest invention, because it comes with two sets of invisible parenthesis, that we do not have to write when using paper and pencil (or pen).
However, you have to be very, very careful with invisible parentheses when typing or keying in calculations.
When typing into one line, you have to include those parentheses. Forgetting to include them causes tons of trouble.
A TRUE STORY
A few decades ago, a chemist had to calculate something like
Hurriedly typing into the calculator "0.735-0.003/0.726-0.003" into the calculator the chemist got the right answer to the wrong question, and quickly reported the urgently needed results. Unfortunately the result reported was wrong, and all the people in that lab carried the stone of shame for years, because
