The most important thing to remember with this type of problem is PEMDAS, or order of operations.
P: parentheses
E: exponents
M: multiplication
D: division
A: addition
S: subtraction
You can remember this acronym through the phrase "please excuse my dear Aunt Sally". If you solve a problem in this order, tackling each of these things one at a time, you will end up with the correct answer.
3^2+2^2-1^2
Start with the top part of the equation.
The first thing that you see in PEMDAS is the "e", or exponents. Before you add the numbers, square them.
3^2=3x3=9
2^2=2x2=4
-1^2=-1x-1=1 (negatives cancel out)
Now you add.
9+4+1=14
Now that the top part has been simplified, go on to the bottom part.
8�2x6x1�6
You work the "m" and the "d", or the multiplication and division, in order from left to right.
8�2=4
4x6=24
24x1=24
24�6=4
Which means that your top and bottom parts together are 14/4. This can simplify out to 7/2, or 3 1/2.
