Question 14410: You are picking up a friend and going to a concert. Your friend lives 3 miles west of your house and the concert is 21 miles east of your friends house. When you are at the concert, how far away from home are you?
How can I figure this out please help!

So let x be your house; you drive 3 miles to get to your friends house, then your drive back past your house 21 miles to get to the concert.
x+3=21
Subtract both sides by 3:
x+3-3=21-3
x=18
Your are 18 miles from your house.
