Mallory has saved x half dollars. She has four times as many quarters as half-dollars. The total she saved is $61.50. How many half-dollars does she have? How many quarters does she have?
Tony, Dominic, and Joseph purchased a sub sandwich. Tony ate 1/4 of the pieces. Dominic and Joseph each ate 1/6 of the pieces. There are 5 pieces left. How many total pieces were there originally?

If Mallory has x half dollars, then she has 4x quarters. So:
50x+25(4x)=6150
150x=6150
x=41
Mallory has 41 half-dollars and 164 quarters.
Tony ate 1/4 of the pieces, and Dominic and Joseph each ate 1/6th of the pieces, or 1/3 of the pieces. 1/4+1/3=3/12+4/12=7/12 represents the total amount of the sub eaten, leaving 5/12 of the sub left. If there are 5 equal pieces left, representing 5/12 of the original sandwich, then there were (5/12)/5, or 12 pieces originally. ☺☺☺☺
