Do you want to Complete the Square to put the left-member trinomial into the form of the right-member shown?

On the left side, , factorable into represents the area of a rectangle, with 'length' x and 'height' . Chop this into a square of x by x and x by (x-6)-x, chop the x by (x-6-x) piece into two equal parts from top to bottom, and arrange one of the pieces along the bottom of the x by x square. Now, a small square piece is missing in order to COMPLETE the SQUARE for what was essentially the area for the rectangle of x by x-6.

The missing square piece to add, which is the same as the term to add, is square units.

ADD and SUBTRACT 9 to the left-hand member of your "equation":
