Most "exponential" graphs level off because there is only a finite number of objects. For example, the graph of a population of a species may appear to grow exponentially, but levels off because there is a finite amount of resources and space. This is often called a "logistics function." Or, when measuring the concentration or thermal energy of chemical reactions, they typically follow a logistics curve.
