as x becomes very large (either positively or negatively),
the -5 in the numerator and the +1 in the denominator become insignificant
this leads to a horizontal asymptote of y = 1/2
as x approaches -1/2, the denominator approaches zero
this leads to a vertical asymptote of x = -1/2
