Subtract 8 from both sides to get:

24 = -4x-5x
------
Using the distributive law,
24 = (-4-5)x
----
Simplify::
-9x = 24
----
Divide both sides by -9 to get:
x = -24/9
---
Reduce to get:
x = -8/3
