Question 938589: Solve each system by substitution.
x = y + -3
x - y = -1

Answer by algebrahouse.com(1659)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x = y + -3
x - y = -1

(y + -3) - y = -1 {substituted (y + -3), in for x, into bottom equation}
y - 3 - y = -1 {removed parentheses}
-3 = -1 {combined like terms}
= no solution

When the variable disappears and you are left with a false statement, such as, -3 = -1, then there is no solution.
In other words, these two lines are parallel and do not have a point of intersection.
