Question 86590: Need to figure dimensions of a rectangle with we know the area and that one side is 26 ft longer than 5 times the other side. So - started by saying one side is X and the other is 5X plus 26. Then wrote the formula as x (x plus 26) equals 427. I ended up with 5X squared plus 26X equals 427. I'm able to figure the answer in my head, but can't for the life of me figure out the equation that solves the problem. I'm trying to help my wife with her homework here and I'm a huge disappointment. Can you please help?
Answer by stanbon(75887)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
I ended up with 5X squared plus 26X equals 427
5x^2+26x = 427
5x^2+26x-427=0
Use the quadratic formula to get:
x=[-26+-sqrt(26^2-4*5*-427)]/110
x=[-26+-96]/10
Get the positive solution:
x=[-26+96]/10
x=7' (one side)
5x+26=35+26=61' (the other side)
===============
