4(3q + 2) = 2(6q + 4)

Use the distributive principle to multiply the outer 
multiplier by each inner term inside the parentheses:

4·3q + 4·2 = 2·6q + 2·4

   12q + 8 = 12q + 8

Subtract 8 from both sides

       12q = 12q 

Subtract 12q from both sides,
writing the left side as 0q

        0q = 0

Any number when substituted for
q will give a true equation. That's
because 0 times any number will
always equal to 0.  So this kind 
of an equation is called
an "identity".  Every number is a 
solution to it.
