The common mistake is not distributing the 2 to everything within the parentheses. You can avoid the mistake, by either writing arrows connecting the 2 to everything within the parentheses, or by doing this:
2(x)+2(-2)=x+3
2x-4=x+3

Notice that the -2 was supposed to be -4.
