To solve: 3+5h-9=4(3h+4)-1
Step 1: Getting rid of the parens, we have:
3+5h-9=12h+16-1
Step 2: Lets go ahead and add the 3 and -9 on the left side of the equation and also the 16 and -1 on the right side of the equation to get:
5h-6=12h+15
Step 3: Need to get the unknown (h) on one side of the equation (usually left side) and the numbers on the other. We will do this by first adding 6 to both sides of the equation and next adding -12h to both sides of the equation
(We are allowed to do this. Remember the rules: "equals added to equals the sums are equal", etc.)
and we get this:
5h -6+6-12h=12h-12h+15+6 Simplifying we have
-7h=21 To get the value of h, we must divide both sides of the equation by -7 (the rule again) and we get:
h=-3
