Question 580949: How do I solve this:
6<-2(x-1)<12
I have tried it like this:
6= -2.x and -2.-1 = 12
6< 2x+2<12
6-2 < 2x+2-2 < 12-2
4 < 2x < 10
4 < 2x < 10
-- -- --
2 2 2
2 < X < 5
The answer should be -5 and -2, but I can't figure out what I did wrong. Can you tell me?
Thanks,

Answer by stanbon(75887)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
solve this:
6<-2(x-1)<12
----------------------
Note: the inequalities switch when you divide or multiply by a negative.
-------------------------
Divide thru by -2 to get:
-6 < x-1 < -3
----
Add 1 along the line to get:
-5 < x < -2
