Answer by Theo(13342)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the sum of a number and three is less than nineteen less than the number.
it says define a variable, write an equality, and solve.
the statement is not an equality.
it is an inequality.
the statement, as far as i can tell states:
x + 3 < (x-19) - 19
when you simplify this equation, you get:
x + 3 < x - 38
you normally solve for x as follows:
subtract 3 from both sides of the equation to get:
x < x - 41
subtract x from both sides of the equation to get:
0 < -41
the x variable disappears.
if the remaining statement was true, then x could have been any value and the statement would be true.
since the remaining statement is false, than there is no solution to this equation.
