3x-1=x-7

Get all the x terms on one side by subtracting x from each side of the equation.
3x-x-1=x-x-7
2x-1=-7

Get all the number terms on the right side by adding +1 to each side:
2x-1+1=-7+1
2x=-6

Divide both sides by 2:

With these equations we want x on one side of the equal sign so 3x-1=x-7 subtract x and add 1 to both sides to get:
2x=-6 Divide by 2 on each side to result in:
x=-3
