foil simply stands for first, outside, inside, and last
:
so you will be multiplying the first terms in each factor together then the outside terms of each term, then inside terms of each and lastly the last terms of each factor
:

:

so
8) (7-2y)(10-3y) first terms are 7(10)=70
                outside terms are 7(-3y)=-21y
                 inside terms are -2y(10)=-20y
                   last terms are -2y(-3y)=

:
bring it all together by combining all like terms
:
I will let you do the other problem

FOIL stands for First, Outside, Inside, Last, so:

Step 1: Multiply the First terms: =

Step 2: Multiply the Outside terms: =

Step 3: Multiply the Inside terms: =

Step 4: Multiply the Last terms: =

Step 5: Add the results of the previous 4 steps:

Step 6: Collect like terms:

Done.

Now do problem 9 the same way.

Students have asked me why the process is done in that particular order. For example, why not do it First, Last, Inside, Outside? There is no particular reason except that FLIO doesn't spell anything that a student would be likely to remember. In fact, it makes absolutely no difference in what order you perform the multiplications so long as you perform all four of them and properly sum the results.

Write back if you still have questions.

Oh, and by the way, the ONLY reason that you are lousy at math is because you SAY you are lousy at math. Stop saying it and it will cease to be true. Of course, you also have to do your homework.
