In your first step you lost an x. It should be
-5x - 1 = 6x + 54

The next step is to get all the x terms on one side. You do this by getting rid or "undo"ing the x terms on one side. Since you have a +6x on the right side, you can undo the +6x by subtracting 6x from each side:
-5x - 6x - 1 = 6x -6x + 54
-11x -1 = 54

Now, you have all the x-terms on the left side, you should get all the number terms to the opposite side. You need to undo the -1, by adding +1 to each side.
-11x -1+1 = 54 +1
-11x = 55

Finally, you need to undo the multiplication by the -11. You do this by dividing both sides by -11.

Answer by princessequations15(2)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!

FIRST YOU DO THE DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY.
-5x-1 = 6(x+9)
-5x-1 = 6X + 54
NOW YOU JOIN THE LIKE TERMS TOGETHER
-5x-1 = 6X + 54 bEfOrE
-5X + 6X = 54 - 1 AfTeR
NOW SOLVE
X = 53
JUST A REMINDER : 1 AND X ARE THE SAME THING. SO 6 - 5 = 1 OR X. THIS HELPS YOU GET TO THE ANSWER QUICKER.
