Question 162646: Hi,
I have a problem in which the first part of the equation is 6[8-(Y+4)]. I have the solution to this problem, and I understand all the operations except, the first step which is to remove the parentheses around Y+4 and to change the sign here to Y-4. Then, this part of the equation becomes 6(8-Y-4).
What rule is being applied here that allows me to change the order of operations by removing the parentheses and changing the sign from + to - ?
Thank you very much,

You can put this solution on YOUR website! It's the distributive property.
You are distributing the (-1) that is in front of the parentheses.
Here it is step by step.
