-(-4)+10
-12+[-(-5)]
You need to remember any number in parenthesis has a one outside of it, even though in algebra they never write a 1, you need to remember there is. So when you have;
-(-4) it actually is;
-1(-4) and when you multiply 2 negative numbers, what do you get?
A positive, so it would make that -(-4)= 4
So the problem actually is;
4+10=14
Same with the other problem;
[-(-5)] = [-1(-5)]= 2 negatives multiplied together= positive,so the answer:
[-1(-5)]=5
-12+5=-7;
Also keep in mind the rules:
-*-=+
+*+=+
When you multiply the same signs answer is positive.
-*+=-
When you multiply different signs, answer is negative.
With adding;
(+)+(+)=+
(-)+(-)=-
With subtracting;
If the signs are different, subtract the numbers and KEEP THE SIGN OF THE LARGER NUMBER.
ex.;
-12+5= subtract the numbers= 7, and you keep the sign of the larger number,which is -12, so the answer would be -7
I really hope this clears things up a little. I know negatives and positives get really confusing, but it is SO impoortant to get those!
