The Associative Law say that it doesn't matter how we group the numbers, so:
(a+3+5)= (a+3)+5= a+3+y, etc., any way you group them you get the same answer.
------------------------------------------
By the way, it also applies to multiplication:
(a×b)×c = a×(b×c)
--------------------------------------------
How is it used? Sometimes it is easier to add or multiply in a different order. But you can't mix them. The law applies to pure multiplication or pure addition:
3+2+5= 11 any way you add them
3*2*5= 30 any way you multiply them.
BUT:
(3*2)+5 is not the same as 3+(2*5)
