3a^3+2 = 3(a^3)+2. So if a=1, plug a in and get 3(1^3)+2 or 3+2. so if a=1, then 3a^3+2=5. Just remember, 3a^3 is 3(a^3) and not (3a)^3. That would be 27a^3. So if there are no parentheses, then cube the variable first, and then multiply it by the coefficient.
