In the English language we use "pronouns" to take the place of a noun. In the same way, a variable is like a "pro-number", in that we use it to take the place of a number. A real life problem does not come with an equation, does it. For example, suppose you are trying to find the length and width of a particular rectangle that has a certain perimeter and some additional characteristics. You don't know what the width and length of the rectangle are, so you assign variables like x or w or l to these unknown quantities until you can find out what they are. Then you can write an equation in terms of these variables, you can solve the equation and find out what numbers those variables represented. That is the whole process of algebra dating back to the Greeks in days of B.C.

As to your question of how can you get your algebra credit or be proficient in algebra, I tell you, I LOVE that question. You have to get a good teacher, plan to spend a LOT of time doing homework and PRACTICING, like a musician or an athlete must do to become proficient, and get LOTS of HELP from TUTORS, especially the TUTORS on algebra.com!!! I could write a BOOK on this topic!!
