Question 65861: Why are variables useful in algebra?
Answer by checkley71(8403) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A variable is used in algebra because it represents a non numeric value or unknown. A letter or a symbol is used instead of a number because the number is unknown -- that's the reason for the algebratic equation.
The unknown is in many cases a variable because it can have more than one valid answer.
