You can use basic test taking techniques to find your answer if you know that perpendicular lines have opposite reciprocal slopes. This means that if the lines are perpendicular and one line has a slope of -5/3, then the line perpendicular to that line will have a slope of 3/5. You flip the number over and give it the opposite sign (positive or negative).
There is only one answer in your problem that does this. However, you can go further and put the point (-5,7) into the equation with the new slope and you will get your y-intercept value as well.

Do you want your math questions answered quickly and completely? Do you want to ask follow up questions like, “How do you do that?” or “Why did you do that?”? Email your questions to justin.sheppard.tech@hotmail.com and I will answer your questions within 12 hours of submission (usually within 2-3 hours of submission). I charge $2 per question and I will provide a .pdf file of the problem worked out. I will also offer to discuss the problem with you over the phone, through skype, or via an online whiteboard. Payments to be made securely through PayPal AFTER you are satisfied with the answer and services that I provide. Write an equation in slope-intercept form of line that passes thru -5,7
And is perpendicular to the graph of y = x - 1
:
Find the slope of the perpendicular line (m2):
m1 * m2 = -1
:
* m2 = -1
m2 = -1 *
m2 =
:
use the point/intercept formula: y - y1 = m(x - x1)
where
m =
x1 = -5
y1 = 7
:
y - 7 = (x - (-5))
y - 7 = (x + 5)
y - 7 = x + (*5)
y - 7 = x +
y = x + + 7
y = x + +
y = x +
which is
y = 2x + 20
