Question 182301: What are x and y axes?

It is "axis" not axes.
If you draw a coordinate plane (think of it as a sheet of graph paper. Just a plain piece of paper with a grid on it).
Draw a horizontal line and a vertical line on it. The point where those two lines cross is called the "origin". The horizontal line is called the x axis; the vertical line is called the y axis.
Any point can be plotted on the graph. For instance, point (0,0) is the origin.
Point (2,5) is a positive 2 units on the x axis and a positive 5 units on the y.
