Question 1069012: two parallel chords lie on opposite sides of the centre of a circle of radius 13cm. their lenghts are 10cm and 24cm.what is the distance between the chords

Draw this out.
The radius is 13, and the perpendicular to the chord from the center divides it into two equal parts.
Half of 10 is 5, and the other side, the distance from the center, is 12 cm 5-12-13 right triangle.
The second part has the length 24 and half the length 12 cm. This distance from the center is 5 cm for the same reason.
The distance between the two chords is 5 cm + 12 cm=17 cm.
