If a circle has a diameter of 25cm, how far from the centre of the circle is a chord 16cm long
:
let x = the distance from the center to the middle of the chord
r = 12.5 cm (diameter is 25)
:
make a drawing of this, note a right triangle formed by half the chord (8cm), x,
and the radius (hypotenuse); using pythag:
x^2 + 8^2 = 12.5^2
x^2 = 12.5^2 - 8^2
x^2 = 156.25 - 64
x^2 = 92.25
x =
x = 9.6047 cm from the center to the chord
