4 is a perfect square because:

square root of 4 = 2 is an integer.

square root of 4 = -2 is also an integer.

One of the easiest ways to determine if a number is a perfect square is to find all the integer factors of the number and determine if one of the factors is the same number multiplied by the same number.

An example would be:

Determine if 36 is a perfect square.

The factors of 36 are:

1*36 = 36
2 * 18 = 36
3 * 12 = 36
4 * 9 = 36
6 * 6 = 36 *****

***** This is the square root of 36 because 6*6 = 36.

Since 6 is an integer, then 36 is a perfect square.

Another example would be

Determine if 8 is a perfect square.

1*8 = 8
2*4 = 8
4*2 = 8
8*1 = 8

There is no whole number that, when multiplied by itself, equals 8, therefore 8 is not a perfect square.
