A propane tank is in the form of a cylinder with two half-spheres, one on each end. The radius of the cylinder is the same as the radius of each half-sphere. What is the volume of a propane tank of cylindrical length 12 ft and radius 5 ft, correct to the nearest whole cubic foot?
.
Volume of the two ends:
(4/3)(pi)r^3
=(4/3)(3.14)5^3
= 523.333 cubic feet
.
Volume of center section:
(1/2)(pi)r^2 * length
= (1/2)(3.14)5^2 * 12
= 471 cubic feet
.
Total:
523.333 + 471 = 994.333 cubic feet
Nearest whole cubic foot:
994 cubic feet

--------------
Volume of the sphere is
=
= 523.33 cubic feet
----------------------
Volume of the cylindrical section is
=
= 942.478 cubic feet
---------------------
Total = 523.33 + 942.78
=~ 1466 cubic feet
