What volume of wood is used in making an open wooden box that is 5 dm long, 4 dm wide and 3.5 dm high, external dimensions if the wood used is 2 cm thick.

First convert decimeters to centimeters. 

Then calculate the volume of the rectangular box with the external dimensions.

Then calculate the volume of the internal space using internal dimensions.

They are in 2*2 = 4 cm lesser then the external dimensions.

Then distract the smaller number from the larger.

The answer is 50*40*35 - (50-4)*(40-4)*(35-2) = . . . (?)

We distract only 2 from 35 because the box is open

H=external height=3.5dm=35cm

internal length=50cm-4cm=46cm
internal width=40cm-4cm=36cm
internal height=35cm-2cm=29cm (only subtract 2cm because no top)

volume of wood=external volume - internal volume (space inside)
volume of wood=(50cm)(40cm)(35cm)-(46cm)(36cm)(29cm)
volume of wood=70000cm^3-48024cm^3=21976cm^3
