A health food store sells seasoning blends in bulk. One blend contains 20% basil. Sheila wants to add pure basil to some 20% blend to make 16 ounces of her own 30% blend. Let b reperesent the amount of basil Sheila should add to the 20% blend.

Question 228007: Simplify and express using positive exponents.
NUMERATOR IS: 12a^7 + 16a^5 - 8a^2
DENOMERATOR IS: -4a^2
I do not know ALT keystrokes to express the fraction exactly as shown. I know the answer is:
(-3a^5 - 4a^3 + 2)but I have no idea why or how. Why is the answer not a fraction? fyi {12a^7= 12a to the seventh power} ect... Is there an affordable calculator I can buy that will compute the problem?

The new June price of the product increased by 5% on December 1st. How many dollars did the product increase by Dec 1. I don't have a clue! Can you please help?

Question 235464: Employee A and Employee B paychecks totaled $2,388.90. Employee A worked two hours and Employee B worked 43 hours during this time period. What is each of their hourly rate? (There hourly rates may (probably will) be different.)
A + B = $2,388.90
A/2 + B/43 = $2,388.90
This is what I think the two problems are supposed to be, but when I solve one for A to substitute in the other, it isn't working. HELP!!
