Question 189949: Hello,
first the task, then what I tried!

Task:
Consider the polynomial f(x) = 5x3 – 9x2 – 17x – 3.
(a) By using the Rational Zero Theorem, list all possible rational zeros of the given polynomial.
(b) Find all of the zeros of the given polynomial. Be sure to show work, explaining how you have found the zeros.

I have tried this but still can't figure it out. I tried x(5x^2-9x-17)-3
then: x(5x^2-9x-20)
now I thought to convert it as follows: X(x+ )(x- ) but I cannot find anything that is 20 but in the middle results in 9. If I will find those two then I know the two zeros right?

Question 189952: 5x^3-9x^2-17x-3
i have to solve this as follows:
(a) By using the Rational Zero Theorem, list all possible rational zeros of the given polynomial.
For A, I know that i have to do it with the rational zero theorem, but here is a sentence of a book that i don't understand.
if a rational number p/q is a zero of f(x), then p must be a factor of -4 and q must be a factor of 3. the task belonging to it is: 3x^4-11x^3+10x-4
Then it says possibility for p = +-1, +-2, +-4
possibility for q is =-1, +-3
i dont understand how to get +-4 and for q +-3. as the sentence above states. I dont get how to find the possibilities...

(b) Find all of the zeros of the given polynomial. Be sure to show work, explaining how you have found the zeros.
For B, This is what I thought!
f(x) = 5x3 – 9x2 – 17x – 3.
x(5x^2-9x-17)-3
but then with x(5x^2-9x-20) how would you find something that would result in 20 and 9
X9X- )(X+ )
I am stuck here or is it the wrong approach?

Question 193144: Finding an inverse formula of f(x) = 9-4x

then i switched y with x: x=9-4y then i solved for y
x-9 = -4y
(x-9)/-4 = y
This is a final review exercise and the possible solutions are as follows, but none are like mine:
f-1(x) = 9+4x
= 1/(9-4x)
= (x-4)/1
= (9-x)/4
the fourth one would be the closest, but is not the same as I got...

Question 193301: I would just like to know if i calculated the following correctly!
Consider the polynomial f(x) = 3x3 + 13x2 – 11x – 5.
Find all of the zeros of the given polynomial. Be sure to show work, explaining how you have found the zeros.

Highest degree is 3.
Thus, I tried +-1, +-2, +-3
+-1,+-3
All possible zeros are +1 and -1/3
I simply tried it:
1| 3 13 -11 -5
3 16 5
3 16 5 0

-1/3| 3 13 -11 -5
-1 -4 5
3 12 -15 0
all others did not have the remainder 0 but I did it the same way!

Question 193300: If I have the following: A farmer has 60 feet of fencing with which to enclose a rectangular pen adjacent to a long existing wall. He will use the wall for one side and the available fencing for the remaining three sides. If the sides perpendicular to the wall have length x feet, the area A of the enclosure is given by
A(x) = –2x2 + 60x.
I found the vertex which is :
The vertex is (15, 450)
A=-2
B=60
C=0
X=-b/2a
X= -60/[2*(-2)] = -60/-4 = 15
A(x) = -2(15)^2+60(15)
= -2(225)+900
= -450+900 = 450
Now, the following questions are:
Use the work in the previous parts to help determine the dimensions of the enclosure which yield the maximum area, and state the maximum area. (Fill in the blanks below. Include the units of measurement.)
The maximum area is:
when the sides perpendicular to the wall have length x =
and the side parallel to the wall has length x=
I know that A = 2L+2W but I am not sure how to determine those three... I thought the vertex would help me somehow but I got really confused...
Could you help me with this?
