I tried setting up a system of equations but that did not seem to help.

for a certain student, the average of 10 test scores is 80. If the high and low are dropped, the average is 81. What is the average of the high and low score?
============
10 #'s * avg 80 = 800
---
8 #'2 * avg 81 = 648
----
800 - 648 = 152 for the 2 #'s
152/2 = 76 avg

PS You don't need to inform us that it's a "word problem."
