Okay so the key phrase in the problem is "two thirds were destroyed." So if they're saying two thirds, how much is two thirds? 120 trees, as stated in the problem. So in order to find the original amount of ash trees, you need to find three thirds or otherwise 3 out of 3, which is your original amount of trees.

120*3=2x
2x=360
x=180
