To find the arithmetic mean, add the scores together and divide by the number of exams.
Let's look at Math
(49 + 89 + 77 + 80 + 91)/5; mean is 77.2
If you drop the 49 (maybe a bad day for the test taker), you have:
(89+77+80+91)/4 (only four because you dropped the 5th test); mean is 84.25
The difference is 84.25 - 77.2, or 7.05.
