Question: I know the 5th number is 24 because I checked for the answer, but I do not know how to solve it. How would this problem be solved?

Problem: The average of a set of four integers is 14. When a fifth number is included in the set, the average of the set increases to 16. What is the 5th number?

Sum of the 4 integers is 4*14 = 56
--------
Equation:: (56+x)/5 = 16
56+x = 80
x = 24 (the 5th number)

5 numbers a,b,c,d,e

we know a+b+c+d=14*4=56
and a+b+c+d+e=16=5=80
so e = (a+b+c+d+e) - (a+b+c+d) = 80-56 = 24
5th integer is 24
