Four students took a biology exam that has a maximum of 100 points. The average of the exams was 80 points. Then Molly and Emma took the exam and the average of all six exams was 85 points. What is the lowest grade Emma could have received? 

Ans:

Average of 4 students = 80

Therefore total marks of the 4 students = 4*80 = 320

Including Molly and Emma, average of the 6 students is 85

So total marks for 6 students = 85*6 = 510

Since marks scored by first 4 students is 320, marks scored by Molly and Emma

= 510 - 320 = 190.

So, Molly and Emma scored 190 together.

Since max marks that Molly could have scored is only 100, Emma must have scored

AT LEAST 90, to make up the total of 190.

Lowest points scored by Emma = 90
