Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
X can print a newsletter in 4 1/2 hours while Y can print the same in 6 hours. How long will it take both of them to print a newsletter together?
--------
X DATA:
time = 9/2 hrs/job ; rate = 2/9 job/hrs
--------------------------
y DATA:
time = 6 hrs/job ; rate = 1/6 job/hr
--------------------------
Together DATA:
time = x hrs/job ; rate = 1/x job/hr
------------------
Equation:
rate + rate = together rate
2/9 + 1/6 = 1/x
---
Multiply thru by 18x to get:
4x + 3x = 18
7x = 18
x = 2 4/7 hrs (time to do the job together)
