Question 716908: A student missed 6 problems on an English test and received a grade of 86%. If all the problems were of equal value, how many problems were on the test? I'm not sure how to find the answer for this. I am awful with percents.
Answer by jndarrell(58) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Since 86% is equal to the number of questions a student got correct, then the difference of 100-86 (14%) is equal to the 6 questions they got wrong. So you would do the following steps:
6 over X is = 14 over 100
6/x=14/100
CROSS MULTIPLY!!
14x=600
Divide both sides to find x
x=42.86 (rounded to the 100th)
Check the instructions you were given regarding rounding. I would say 43 problems.
