Question 661017: if the average(arithmetic mean)of x,5x,and 6x is 8,what is the value of x ?

x, 5x, and 6x is 8

To find the mean of some numbers you

1.  add them
2.  count the numbers
3. divide by the number of numbers

So I will follow those instructions with x, 5x, and 6x

1.  add them:   x + 5x + 6x = 12x
2. count the numbers: x is one, 5x is two, and 6x is three. So there are 3 numbers.
3. divide by the number of numbers: = 4x

Now we are told that must equal to 8, so we write that 4x and then put = 8
after it, like this

     4x = 8

Then we divide both sides by 4

     =

     =

    x = 2
